The Veranda House is located on Daud Pota Road at the edge of Old Civil Lines of Karachi, and attempts to embody the notion of being from that specific area of the city. This is done by creating a comprehensive expression of the houses’ relationship with its neighbourhoods’ rich architectural heritage, the ever evolving sense of modernity running through the fabric of the city, the extreme climate of the city and its effects on the lifestyles of its inhabitants. Taking into consideration dualities of; front and back, heavy and light, street face and house face, the house creates and individual dialogue between all these elements in its immediate context. The House is organised by placing two volumes on the North and South edges of the building footprint creating a sense of a courtyard between them. Sheltered between these masses a light and permeable bridge allows westerly winds and ambient day lighting to flood the heart of the living spaces housed in this zone.
